SHE HAD LOST HER PHONE! A fun case of some waking hypnosis reviewed

One fascinating aspect of what we call the subconscious mind is that it can work on a problem or challenge without our conscious awareness that it is doing so. Recently I had an incident that demonstrates this beautifully.

Let me start off by saying that when you offer professional hypnosis services, it is usually advised you don't attempt to work with close friends or family members as it can blur personal boundaries. However there are situations where its OK to make an exception.

This past weekend one my daughters reported one of the most stressful things that can happen to a teenager in this day and age- SHE HAD LOST HER PHONE! The last thing she remembered was using her phone to call me for a ride home Friday evening after visiting some friends.

Usually I am able to find lost objects pretty easily, for some reason I have always had a knack for this. Yet this one had me stumped. Along with the rest of the household, I searched high and low but to no avail.  SHE HAD LOST HER PHONE!

Sensing her mounting frustration, I asked her if she would be willing to try something like hypnosis and she agreed.

I had her sit and close her eyes and told to take a few easy breaths in order to relax. Next, I had her recollect the events of the evening. We had gone out to dinner as a family prior to her going to the friend's house, so I asked to remember what she had ate, what music playing in the car. These were seemingly insignificant details, but I figured doing this would trigger memory associations.

Next we reviewed what we went on at the friends house, the ride home after and what she did when she returned.  A couple of times she would draw a blank so I would have her rewind and go back to the beginning of the evening and review what we knew and more details would emerge.

Eventually she remembered she had fallen asleep while watching a movie. Later on she awoke briefly in the middle of the night and got up to change into her pajamas and recalled hearing something fall from her bed and go bump on the floor.  As this detail emerged she got kind of puzzled look on her face.

At this point I had her open her eyes and said we would pick up on this later and offered the suggestion that when we focus on something intently for awhile, other information often pops up on its own later on.

At this point I had to head out for an hour or so run some errands and when I returned guess who had FOUND HER PHONE? After I had left she reported she had been brushing her hair while looking in the mirror when all of sudden a thought came to her that the phone slid under a bookcase when she heard the bump in the night. Lo and behold that is exactly where it was.

She reported that this 'paranormal experience' as she described it was a bit unsettling, nevertheless she was happy that she had FOUND HER PHONE.

Actually what happened was perfectly natural and a wonderful demonstration of how the subconscious mind can be a magnificent problem solving tool, especially when we give a challenge our full attention for a time and then relax and let it go for awhile.

Numerous artists and inventors have reported a similar chain of events when they experienced their greatest inspirations and breakthroughs.

Would you like to learn how to harness more of your natural abilities? Please give me a call at (732) 714-7040 so we can discuss whether hypnosis can help you as it has so many others.

Mind Over Munchies?

Can your beliefs and expectations about what you are about to eat have a tangible effect on your appetite? Or is it just a matter of straightforward math as to calories in and the level of satisfaction?

The placebo effect is where someone's positive belief about a medication or other form of treatment initiates a healing response even though that intervention is not actually proven to be effective on its own.

It is now known placebos are not just a matter of people being tricked into wellness as was once believed. In response to thought processes, the mind and body produces a host of powerful biochemical reactions.  For example, the belief a sugar pill will combat pain will trigger the body to produce endorphins, the self-produced version of morphine.

Yet it seems the inner mechanism that allows placebos to work is not limited to medical treatments. Research suggests your thoughts about what you eat has an important effect as well.

In a study at Yale, a group of volunteers were fed a 380 calorie milkshake on 2 separate occasions. One half of the participants were given a label that read that their shake was "indulgent" and contained 620 calories. The other half received a label stating the shake was "sensible" and had only 140 calories.

Their levels of ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates appetite was measured 3 times. The first was during the time they read the label, the second as they drank the shake and a third reading was done afterward.

The result was that those drinking the indulgent shake had a steep decline in ghrelin (which would mean reduced hunger)  while the "sensible" group had a relatively flat response, meaning they would most likely be just as hungry afterward.

This result led the researchers to conclude that the effect of food consumption on ghrelin levels may have a strong psychological component.

What can you possibly take away from this? One possibility is that cultivating the practice eating mindfully and with a sense of enjoyment may be much more effective in reducing appetite than obsessing on calorie counts.

A Wish or a Desire?

There is a Zen story where a young novice approaches the master asking how he could achieve his wish of experiencing true enlightenment.

Without a word the master roughly grabbed the young man and dunked his head underwater in a nearby horse trough. He struggled for some time until the master released him, sputtering and gasping for air.

"When you desire enlightenment as much as you craved air just a moment ago, then you will find it," said the elder monk.

A bit extreme and not very nice if you ask me, but it does raise a question. What is the difference between a wish and a desire?

It may seem like a bit of semantics, but a wish is kind of weak and passive where a desire is strong and all consuming.

You may want greater health or success, but has it been a wish or a desire? This is an important distinction because in order to make significant change you have to overcome the natural tendency to fall into predictable ruts.  Emotion and passion is what will drive you out of the rut.

Yet this raises another question. What curbs our desires?

In Dr Rolf Alexader's classic book The Healing Power of the Mind (1989), the author notes that the subconscious mind will sometimes withdraw desire as a protective measure, when the fear of disappointment is greater than whatever emotional or physical pain you are going through.

This can explain why people often remain stuck even though the reasons to change far outweigh those to stay the same. People know they should stop smoking, eat and exercise well, be more confident and so on. However, reasoning is a conscious mind function and when it comes into conflict with subconscious programming, the latter almost always wins.

Hypnosis can help you quell those fears of failure and other negative conditioning. Having an experienced hypnosis practitioner in your corner can frequently help you make a significant breakthrough. Hypnosis and Nausea Relief?

Getting sick to your stomach is one of the most unpleasant experiences going. Yet did you know that in certain cases hypnosis may offer significant relief?

More frequently than not vomiting is a protective and potentially life saving involuntary response. Often it occurs when we are exposed to a pathogen (stomach bug) or ingest an excess of alcohol or something else that is toxic in high enough doses.  The body is purging itself of something it recognizes as harmful and this should not be suppressed.

However there are also two fairly common situations where nausea is not productive and can actually do more harm than good. One goes by the medical term of hyperemesis gravidium, but is better known as morning sickness in pregnant women. The other is the nausea that occurs as a side effect of chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer.

With both morning sickness and cancer treatment there is a physical reason for the nausea. A woman's body undergoes dramatic changes in order to carry a baby. Cancer can be a tenacious disease, so the drugs used to treat it need to be powerful as well.

Yet due to the way the brain works, by unconsciously matching patterns, it is possibly for the nausea to start being initiated by environmental and emotional cues that are simply associated with but not actually related to the original chemical trigger. Its as if stress and negative expectation teaches a person to get nauseous in once pleasant or neutral situations.

(Note: excessive stress  and the subsequent fight or flight response in and of itself often manifests in all manner of disturbances in the digestive tract, including nausea)

This can be highly problematic, making it difficult for a woman to endure a wanted pregnancy and can interfere with the nutritional needs of both herself and the new life she is bringing into the world.

Cancer patients may want to discontinue necessary medical treatment and they too have heightened nutritional needs.

Where hypnosis comes into play, is that it is the most effective method of neutralizing unconscious triggers because it addresses them at their source. There are a number of highly effective techniques that can help you experience significant relief and in my practice I have seen good results in just one or two visits.

If you would like to learn more, please give me a call at (732) 714-7040 for a free, confidential phone consultation.

Brainwashing, Willpower, Hypnosis and Weight Loss?

After smoking cessation, weight loss is one of the primary reasons a person will seek out the services of a professional hypnotist.

Now more than ever people are seeking effective ways of releasing excess weight and with good reason. Public health statistics indicate that overweight and obesity may soon overtake smoking as the leading cause of preventable death and illness in our society.

Now you may be wondering how brainwashing, willpower and hypnosis fit into this situation as the title of this article suggests?

Although the definition of hypnosis varies on who you talk to, I usually go with something along the lines of it being, "a process that utilizes a naturally altered state of consciousness in order to bring about helpful changes in a person's habits and perceptions at a subconscious level of mind."

Using the example of smoking cessation, the shift in perception from cigarettes being a "true friend" that enables a person to manage stress to the more reality-based position that they actually make stress worse will enable a person to let go of that habit much more easily.

(For the record: nicotine raises your heart rate and blood pressure while constricting your blood vessels, that is not relaxation!)

A smoker is literally brainwashed into believing the habit has value. However over time the person begins to experience inner turmoil as they realize the nicotine demon is causing significant harm yet has fear that his or her life will be unmanageable without it.

Many attempts at quitting are based on conscious willpower and these are often short-lived and unpleasant. That's because if the person continues to believe that smoking has some sort of value then not smoking feels like deprivation or a struggle. It doesn't take much to drift back into old patterns in that scenario.

Yet do you "struggle" not to suck on the exhaust pipe of your car? Of course you don't because you perceive any value in doing so. Once you realize smoking never helps and only harms, the fear of not smoking will be replaced with the happy realization that you are free and don't have to smoke anymore.

Now swinging back to weight loss, a huge obstacle is the perception that healthy eating and getting regular activity are too difficult and will make your life less enjoyable. But is this true? What kind of cultural brainwashing may be at work here?

Ask yourself, is carrying around the extra weight making your life easier? Are you happier because you can't wear the clothes you would like to wear? Do the unwanted pounds bring about a feeling of joy in the joints of your knees, hips and back when you try to climb a flight of stairs? I think you get the idea.

Imagine perceiving that eating healthier and getting more regular activity were in fact a gift you give yourself that provides wonderful benefits such as improved appearance, higher energy levels and enhanced self-confidence. Would it take a tremendous amount of willpower to stick with those healthier behaviors if you saw them in that light?

If you would like to learn more, I am here to help. The telephone number here is (732) 714-7040 or fill out the Life Enhancement Strategy Session form and I will get back to you ASAP.

Hypnosis for Enhanced Healing and Recovery

Some skeptical types may think of hypnosis as being out there and too "woo" to be taken seriously, especially when it comes to helping with medical disorders.

However there is plenty of evidence to suggest it deserves a place in your total health care plan.

Two primary aspects of hypnosis: deep relaxation and the cultivation of positive expectation are well documented in their relationship to physical health. The mind and body are not separate entities!

Below are some academic citations of interest. Please feel free to connect with me if you have any questions by calling (732) 714-7040.

Alchemy and the Upside of Addiction? A Different Perspective

A working definition of addiction could be, "the continued use of a substance or engagement in a behavior in spite of negative consequences." Some addictions such as opioid misuse or severe alcoholism have an element of what is called "tissue dependency" where a person may need medical assistance to safely wean off of the drug of choice. However, most addictions such as smoking, overeating, gambling and a host of others do not create tissue dependency, although they can and do create significant problems.

You might wonder what be the upside of addiction when it wreaks so much havoc? Well it does show the person is able to focus and engage in persistent goal seeking behavior. It's been noted that addicts of all varieties seem to be more driven than the average person and that often people in recovery go on to attain remarkable achievements.

For example, smokers always ensure they have a steady supply of cigarettes and plan their activities around when and where they can smoke-no exceptions. "Junk food junkies" will frequently have a stash (often hidden) of their favorite unhealthy food in their home or car. A gambler can always find a place where he or she can lay down a wager and so on.

Just as the alchemists of old sought to transform the base metal lead into gold, its strongly advised that a new set of goals be formulated when a person finally decides to disengage from the addictive behavior.

Dealing with stressors, past trauma and improving self-image are also important factors in recovery, yet finding a healthy and appropriate channel for the goal seeking drive is necessary too.

This is why I will often tell smoking cessation clients that this is the perfect time to get into a fitness program or take care of projects around the house. They are often astounded at how much they are getting done once the compulsion to smoke has been redirected into something positive.

Please feel free to connect if you would like some help transforming some of your lead into gold. Either give me a call directly at (732) 714-7040 or fill out the Life Enhancement Strategy Form and I will get back to you ASAP.

Empowering Questions? A Free Life Enhancement Tip

The use of affirmations is a time tested means of cultivating a positive mindset. Essentially the method involves making self-statements where you state a desired goal as if it were currently true. Examples:

"I am strong and confident."
"I see myself as thin and healthy."
"I choose to eat healthy foods in the right amount."

It is known that if a suggestion is delivered repetitively and with emotion, eventually it will be accepted by the subconscious mind as true. Yet some people don't have the desired response to affirmations, especially when there is a wide gap between their intentions and their current perceived reality. It can seem too much of a stretch if a person is excessively stressed or in a place of deep discouragement to imply they feel otherwise.

An alternative to affirmations is the use of what could be called empowering questions. This technique takes advantage of two little known principles that enable you to avoid creating conscious resistance.

First, the brain will reflexively attempt to answer any question put to it and may continue to work on it "under the radar" so to speak even if you don't know the answer right away. A perfect example of this is the tip of the tongue phenomena. Let's say you try to remember the name of someone you went to high school with but you draw a blank. Hours later when you are doing something totally unrelated, the name springs to mind. Clearly the subconscious mind continued to work on the challenge.

The second principle is that questions indirectly make assumptions. If I ask you how to get to the train station, its assumed going there is indeed possible or the question wouldn't be asked.
To use this technique, silently ask yourself a simple question such as:

"What can I do today that will improve my health?"
"How will I make my business more successful today?"
"What will enable me to feel more confident when I give my presentation tomorrow?"
"Why am I going to succeed at reaching my weight loss goals?"

Reflect on the question for a moment and then let the subconscious work on it. Sort of like the old rotisserie grill infomercial where you "set it and forget it." You might be pleasantly surprised at how the empowering question stimulates your problem solving resources.

I would encourage you to actually write out your empowering question on a post it note or index card and put it somewhere where you will regularly see it like on your mirror or nightstand to create a new habit of thinking.

Please feel free to connect if you have any questions, you can call me directly at (732) 714-7040.

Tinnitus Stress Magnified?

I occasionally  participate in an online forum for people looking for effective strategies when it comes to dealing with tinnitus.

Recently I posted this question to the members there:

"I have been an ATA support group leader in the past here at the Jersey Shore. I also see clients with tinnitus in my hypnosis practice. Here's the question. Do you believe that the initial interactions with your healthcare providers when you developed tinnitus helped or hindered your recovery? I am curious as I have encountered people who felt they were treated with less than adequate sensitivity and this created a sense of hopelessness and panic. For example being told "you have tinnitus, there's nothing that can be done, go home and learn to live with it" without being given any actual direction on coping strategies. Is this commonplace or just a few healthcare providers with a deficiency in empathy and communications skills?"

Dozens of group members took the time to reply and indeed it does seem that the being traumatized by poor communication from healthcare providers is unfortunately rather common.

While some respondents stated they received supportive care, many didn't replying with comments like:
"I was told by an ENT that I waited 9 months to see "just ignore it". My visit was 4 minutes long"

"I saw an insensitive audiologist at a well know high street store who told me people committed suicide with tinnitus. He thoroughly depressed me and scared me to death!! Thank god I saw a hospital audiologist who gave me hope my brain would get fed up and filter the sound out."

"My G.P. used those very words!! "You have Tinnitus, we can't do anything for you, you'll have to learn to live with it!!"

"I'm in Perth Australia and YES I also hate the doctor who said exactly what you wrote. I cried for weeks without any direction. It was  horrible."

The experience of having tinnitus is complex as I am sure you are aware. There is the neurological misfiring that is creating the perceived noise and then there is a person's response to that signal which can vary depending on stress levels and personal expectations.

I suspect that those people who received negative, pessimistic or dismissive communication from their initial healthcare provider had insult heaped on injury in that it increased anxiety and a sense of hopelessness and made the subjective perception of the tinnitus worse.

Never underestimate the reach of the mind/body connection to work in the other direction too.  People who feel better tend to heal better and anything you can do to reduce stress, anxiety and pessimism will help in the long run.

If you could use some help, please consider me a resource. A free initial phone consultation is available, call (732) 714-7040 to set that up.

On the heels of the recent revelations regarding a Hollywood mogul who apparently is a monstrous sexual predator, the hashtag #metoo this week became a way for women to show solidarity on social media platforms, indicating that they too had been victimized by this type of abuse and harassment.

It was very saddening to see how many women have been mistreated in this way and keep in mind these are just the ones who are willing to be publicly identified. The real number is surely much higher.

These kind of traumatic events may leave lasting negative imprints that can significantly impact a person's quality of life unless address properly processed.

After a traumatic experience takes place, for a time there will usually be strong emotional reactions when it is recalled. In the process of healing, the emotions eventually dissipate and the event goes to what is called, "narrative memory." You know it happened, yet it doesn't provoke as powerful a reaction when you think about it.

Yet for some the memories remain fresh; even decades later it can seem as if it happened yesterday.

This becomes problematic since anything that reminds the person of the original event can provoke feelings of fear and anxiety due to a process known as pattern matching.  For example, a person isn't just afraid of the man who abused her, but is fearful of all men in his age group. This kind of dynamic takes place in many other types of unhealthy fears such as public speaking, heights, insects, etc. The generalization ends up limiting the individual that in a way that is not helpful.

A highly effective technique for decreasing the effect of negative memories is the Rewind Technique. I was trained in it a few years back and have seen some notable successes with it.

What attracted me to the Rewind Technique is that it is completely non-traumatic to the client. It is not a process where a person has to vividly relive past hurt, but rather learns how to release the emotional charge. Another positive attribute of the method is that a person does not have to share much in the way of specific details related to the hurt or upset, a general description is adequate.

If you or someone you know may benefit from some assistance in getting over a negative past experience,. a free, confidential phone consultation is available by calling (732) 714-7040

P.S. If you are a professional hypnotist or other helping professional, you can learn about training in the Rewind Technique and other helpful interventions at the Uncommon Knowledge Web Site.

Lady Ga Ga's Pain?

I saw today that a new Netflix documentary is about to be released on the topic of Lady Ga Ga's personal ordeal with fibromyalgia (FM)

FM is a disabling condition marked by diffuse pain, fatigue and cognitive difficulties. Currently there isn't a definitive and consistently effective medical treatment for FM and patients frequently suffer for years.

You will often see different self-care measures such as yoga, massage and mind/body healing methods like meditation and hypnosis mentioned as being potentially helpful and with good reason.

The experience of pain is greatly magnified when the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) is continually activated, this is also quite exhausting and interferes with healing. So anything that puts you into a deeply relaxed state can help.

There is also many who believe that unresolved traumatic events can have a hand in the development of FM and other chronic pain situations. There are specific hypnotic techniques that enhance the healing process from past upsets such as the Rewind Technique that I was trained in.

If you would like to learn more, I am here to help. Give me a call at (732) 714-7040 for a free and confidential phone consultation or connect at my website at https://www.njhypno.com

Health Coaching, New Service Available

This week I passed my exam to become a Certified Health Coach through the American Council on Exercise and I wanted to let you know about a new service I will be offering in addition to hypnosis counseling. The program I completed is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), the same body that accredits certifications for athletic trainers, nurse practitioners, occupational therapists, registered dietitians and many other health professions.

Often a person wishes to make lifestyle changes related to exercise and nutrition in order to improve health and appearance as well as reduce stress levels. Yet it can be hard to know how to start and this is where the Health Coach can be of assistance. Services include:

-Assessing whether it is safe for you to begin a progressive exercise program.
-Helping you to identify goals and a plan to overcome obstacles.
-Providing guidelines on movement and nutrition based on sound, evidence-based research.
-Offer support and encouragement as you make lifestyle changes.

I know I learned a lot of things that I have personally found helpful in the process of this course and look forward to sharing with others. In particular, those who have repeatedly felt stuck and frustrated when it comes to creating a healthier lifestyle.

Health coaching services can be utilized as a standalone or can be integrated with traditional hypnosis services depending on your needs and preferences. I look forward to helping you move forward into your healthier future, give me a call at (732) 714-7040 if you have any questions.

The Egg Rescuer-A Back to School Story

Like a lot of parents, I experienced a mixture of excitement and apprehension sending the kids off to begin a new school year this week. While it is natural to worry a bit, its also important to step back and let the young people in your life struggle a bit with their challenges in and out of the classroom.

Which reminds me of a story...

Once there was a teenage girl who absolutely loved animals and she became a volunteer at an animal rescue center. She was very responsible and everyone appreciated the enthusiastic help she provided.

In the center was an incubator for bird eggs that had been abandoned by the mother or had fallen out the nest. For the past week there had been a large specimen in the incubator that had captured the girl's fascination.

What was the bird going to look like when it hatched? On this particular day she noticed the thin, flexible egg shell popping up slightly in one spot and then another-the baby bird was trying to peck his way out!

Excited, she took out her pocket knife and was going to carefully help her little bird friend escape from the egg until a voice behind cried out STOP! It was the director of the animal rescue center and she said, "thank goodness I caught you before its too late. I know you meant well, but that bird needs to struggle before it hatches or it won't be strong enough to survive afterward."

Happily the baby bird pecked his way out of the egg two days later and went on to be strong and healthy.

This story and others can be found in my e-book Hypnotic Storytelling, available at Amazon and other online booksellers.
