Changing or Sustaining?

"Argue for your limitations, and sure enough they're yours."-Richard Bach
During a continuing education lecture I once attended the instructor discussed language patterns that change or sustain, something we were told to be mindful of when conducting private or group sessions.
As the name implies, change language is all about moving past the place you feel stuck in right now to the place you want to be. It focuses on existing strengths and creating new strategies. In a group or private session, change language creates a dialogue that is hopeful and is most often enjoyable to be part of.
In sustain language you will hear stories or excuses about why change is simply not possible. Often the person is dwelling on their weaknesses rather than strengths. Or using their personal history as a reason why the status quo is etched in stone.
With sustain language it often seems as if the person believes that future could become brighter if only there was a way to fix the past-an impossibility. In a group or private session, the facilitator or other group members will often find themselves being drawn into an argument with the person who is in the sustain mode. This can be quite toxic and may undermine the whole purpose of the interaction if not circumvented.
As was covered in a previous post on repetitive negative thinking (read here) our minds tend to be hardwired towards sustaining language and thought patterns. Yet hypnosis offers a safe and gentle way of introducing new ways of responding instead of repeating the mistakes of the past.
Please feel free to connect for a free Life Enhancement Strategy Session and let's discuss how you can move past negative habits such as smoking and overeating or any other self-defeating habits you may have. The telephone number here is (732) 7814-7040.

Hypnosis for Weight Loss Class Sat. 4/29 by James Malone
I will be offering a hypnosis for weight loss class on Saturday, April 29 @ 11 AM in Point Pleasant Beach. Are you struggling with creating healthy new habits of eating and increased movement in your life?
Is so, you are in good company since public health statistics report 2 out of 3 U.S. adults are overweight or obese. This is literally an epidemic and leads to a host of preventable ills in mind and body.
I often tell my clients, "when trying hard hasn't worked, its time to do something different." Hypnosis allows you to adopt the subconscious mindset and behaviors of a person who naturally does what is right for his or her body.
Addressing your overall stress levels is super important too since we now know that continual tension disrupts both your metabolism and your decision making process in a negative way.
During this program you will.
- Learn strategies of healthy, mindful eating.
- Discover how to overcome procrastination toward exercise.
- Find out how to lower stress levels that lead to unhealthy choices and midriff fat storage.
- Experience a guided hypnosis process and learn self-hypnosis.
- Receive valuable home study materials and a secret bonus gift.
Tuition is $39* and includes valuable home study materials. Advance registration is required due to limited class size, secure your spot through the link below and I will send you a confirmation email with directions shortly.
*Please note prepaid tuition in non-refundable. If you cannot attend credit will be given for a future group or private program

Free Tinnitus Stress Relief Class on 4/1
On Saturday, April 1 at noon, I will be hosting a free stress management class specifically for people who are learning to cope with tinnitus. It will be held in the 2nd floor conference room at my office building in Point Pleasant Beach.
For some individuals the chronic ringing or buzzing of the ears can be a very stressful situation to deal with. Over time, it can have severe impact on your quality of life causing irritability and difficulty with concentration.
Like with any new or upsetting symptom, it is important to first received a thorough medical examination to rule out any serious and or treatable underlying causes of the tinnitus. Often patients are referred to audiologists for evaluation and treatment as well.
While its important to avail yourself to the best medical and audiological treatment you can access, self-care measures that include using stress management techniques can be helpful too. Stress and anxiety tend to increase the perceived volume of tinnitus and keep you focused on it. Many authorities such as the American Tinnitus Association recommend learning relaxation methods as a complementary coping tool.
Yet it can be challenging to learn mind/body healing techniques on your own without some initial guidance.
At the upcoming class you will have an opportunity to have firsthand experience with several intentional relaxation techniques including:
- Mindfulness meditation.
- The emotional detox technique.
- Guided self-hypnosis.
Although the class is free advanced registration is required due to limited seating. Sign up through the link below:

Pause-Take a Breath by Roseann Petropoulos
Seems many of us are experiencing PTED (Post Traumatic Election Disorder). Whether you are on the left or on the right, whatever your point of view, it is an uneasy time. As a rule, the first 100 days of any change is considered the “honeymoon phase”. A time when we embrace our connection to each other before we move forward to accomplish our dreams, our goals.
All change does take us out of our comfort zone and this change is a rocky road for sure. Our society is divided like never before. Or is it? When we look back to the history of our country, we find the many roads that brought about change. Our founding fathers exhibited courage as they took a stand for their vision. History recalls them as an American Hero. Only a real history buff will find the back story to the actual way it was played out.
Who were the men of honor? Who played dirty? Who followed the rules? Who questioned the rules? Who made new rules?
Perhaps this is a wake up call to speak out. Our society has found the calm after the activism of the 60's. What is happening on the national stage is happening within each of us. We are a part of the whole. Society is stepping up in the name of democracy.
We are refusing to sit in denial, confusion, anger or despair. However, the disturbing issue is that we are out of control. Our positions carry the passionate weight of our emotions. The problem continues as we hold so tight to our views that the discussion and arrangement of the terms of transition comes to a halt. Negotiations fail and we all go back into our corners awaiting the next round in the political arena.
On a personal level the political merry go round builds stress in our body, mind and spirit. Have you noticed any changes in your physical well-being? Are you easily irritated, fatigued, experience headaches, poor digestion, increase in blood pressure, lack of mental clarity or lost libido, just to name a few. Does any of this sound familiar?
A meditation practice benefits everyone in managing their stress level. Just to be clear, meditation is the practice of stillness. It is not just for new age people seeking spiritual guidance through ancient rituals. Think about it, all organized religions promote a form of prayer that in essence quiets life's drama. For those folks who never seek internal answers from a Higher Source, know that being in nature or sitting quietly in a private space relaxes the body, clears the mind and opens the flow of wellness.
For those who say, “ I cannot meditate, my thoughts never stop”. Well yes, that is a real concern. Our minds never stop. Meditation is the process of allowing our thoughts to flow. When we attach a story to our thoughts that is when we stop the process. In time, you will be able to catch yourself, stop the story and return to the natural rhythm of your breathe. It is called a practice for exactly that reason. Even the monks who dedicate their life in silence need to continue it as a practice.
Meditation is the ultimate way to stretch and strengthen our mind. It allows the expansion of our views and awareness. We as a people will be able to be more flexible, accepting, gracious and peaceful.
Just for a moment, let us pause and take a breathe. Quoting Ghandi, “We must be the change we wish to see in the world”. Searching for the peace and harmony in our society is futile when we are not peace and harmony. True change comes from within and then we can start the negotiation process.
